In the days before Wisconsin’s statehood, the Fox River was an important water highway for travelers and fur traders. At a natural portage point along the Fox, where the Mansion now stands, a trading post was established as early as 1760. Charles A. The Entrance, is a Victorian addition and was for some years the caretaker’s cottage.
It contains a fine collection of photos of the infamous Porlock Hill and a map of historical sites.
BRISTOL, R.I. – Blithewold Estate, with its 10 gardens and almost 100-year old collection of trees from around the world, is a marvelous place for an afternoon stroll. The gardens include roses, annuals, perennials, wildflowers and a rock garden, all open to the public. In addition to gardens, the 1908 mansion is open for tours, providing a glimpse of the life of the wealthy in the early 1900s. Many of the furnishings are original to the house.
