Fifth- and sixth-graders from St. Stephen’s Episcopal School in Harrisburg recently stayed a couple nights at the Ironmaster’s Mansion in Pine Grove Furnace State Park in Cumberland County for their annual environmental study field trip. They were among the first overnighters in the renovated hostel, a favorite stop-over with Appalachian Trail hikers that closed at the end of April 2010 because of its deteriorating conditions.

A scruffy £1 million mansion in a “spectacular state of dereliction” is among four historic buildings in the Westcountry named as ripe for rescue from irreversible damage.
The buildings, which include a thatched cottage in a Devon village and a former Sunday school overlooking Bodmin Moor, have been highlighted by heritage conservation group SAVE.

A row has broken out after an idea to re-enact the siege of Conwy Castle by English forces was rejected.
Cadw said no to the event despite an earlier re-enactment of Owain Glyndŵr’s capture of the castle in 1404.
One councillor said there were fears people might be offended but insisted this was not the case and that the event would boost tourism.

Nottingham Castle Museum and Art Gallery has won a share of this year’s Art Fund Collect £75,000 prize.
Nottingham is one of eight winners. The success means that a 2010 platinum brooch, an outstanding piece of contemporary craft by Italian jeweller Giovanni Corvaja, will join the Nottingham Castle collections.
