The number of inmates absconding from Castle Huntly this year equals that of the previous six years combined, new figures show.

Documents covering a decade of absconding from the open estate prison show 2016 has dramatically bucked a downward trend in the number of escaping prisoners.

The figures relate to inmates who simply walk out the gates of the prison.
