Do-it-yourself exploration of Hearst Castle is part of a state parks plan to accommodate visitors while cutting the number of tour guides this summer.
Starting June 27, the guided portion of tours will be shorter, but visitors will then have the chance for a self-guided walkabout of the hilltop terraces, gardens and pool area.
