BBC News – Lowther Castle starts to reopen after £9m restoration

5 May 2012
Last updated at 01:47 ET

For one man the reopening of a Gothic styled building in north Cumbria will see the end of a year of “frantic work” by craftsmen and builders.

Andrew Mercer is the project director at Lowther Castle, near Penrith.

He has been involved in the day to day management of a multi-million pound project to turn a collection of ruined buildings and gardens, featuring on the English Heritage “at risk” register, into a viabl… (View original article)

The $100 Million Question – NYTimes.com

NINE months after the billionaire British heiress Petra Ecclestone set this city buzzing with her purchase of a 123-room estate for $85 million, the real estate community here is hoping the sale will help propel prices high enough to crack the elusive $100 million barrier.

Even in this town of fast fortunes and extravagant mansions, the record purchase price, for Candy Spelling’s Manor in Holmby Hills, by Ms. Ecclestone, the daughter of the Formula One chief executive Berni… (View original article)

Mitford manor house in Swinbrook, Oxfordshire gutted by fire | The Sun |News

Fire crews rushed to the sprawling three-storey mansion and battled to save
the hundreds of valuable antiques inside.

Six people — said to be guests and staff members — had to be

Two of those evacuated had to be treated by paramedics at the scene —
one for a suspected broken ankle and the other for smoke inhalation.

Meanwhile, firefighters with breath… (View original article)

Villagers felled by court ruling – Property News – Lancaster Guardian

Published on Thursday 19 April 2012 17:00

A BITTER legal battle between locals and a one-time lord of the manor over a wild stretch of moorland this week ended in final defeat for the villagers in London’s High Court.

The five-year-long dispute – which turned on 360 acres of fell land at the highest point in Lancashire – pitted five residents of the village of Ireby against ex-banker, Peter Burton, and his partner, Susa… (View original article)

Gravetye Manor, West Sussex: hotel review – Telegraph

Sequins, I’m happy to report, are not their thing. Nor are metallic
wallpapers, purple devoré sofas or any of the other ubiquitous hallmarks of
contemporary hotel design. As I strolled around the darkly panelled public
rooms, an initial feeling of relief was quickly followed by one of joy that
the hotel had fallen into exactly the right hands.

“Change but no change” is the Hoskings’ motto, and indeed the new furnishings
look elegant, fresh… (View original article)

Edmund de Waal at Waddesdon: Full of gilt | The Economist

May 8th 2012, 7:25 by T.E. | BUCKINGHAMSHIRE

THE walls are festooned with paintings by Reynolds and Gainsborough. There are desks made for French kings, an elephant sculpture that bewitched the Shah of Persia, and thousands of pieces of Sèvres porcelain that belonged to Louis XV. The contents of Waddesdon Manor, a turreted French-style chateau in Buckinghamshire, are as opulent as the house itself. For Edmund de Waal, a celebrated potter and author, the invitation to crea… (View original article)

Rollins Mansion, Estate of the Day

It’s hard to know what the fate will be of a grand old home like this. The Rollins Mansion in Des Moines, Iowa is an 82-year-old English Tudor built in 1925-27 by Ralph Rollins, owner of Rollins Hosiery Mills. Rollins and cosmetics maker Carl Weeks, who built another Des Moines home, the Salisbury House, were fascinated by English architecture. Both homes were designed by local architects Byron Boyd and Herbert Moore, and both are on the National Register of Historic Places…. (View original article)
