COUNCILLORS have refused planning permission for a former castle in a village to be turned into a 10-bedroom hotel after an outcry by residents.
The decision comes in a long-running saga that has seen various developers wanting to turn the Grade II-listed 18th-century castle at Castle Eden into a hotel.

MAETAENG, THAILAND — There are centuries of stories contained in the meter-thick teak columns of Barry Nathanson’s luxury fixer-upper in the northern hills of Thailand.
Months after putting her Chicago co-op on the rental market for $15,000 a month, Oprah Winfrey is finally taking the plunge and selling it, the Chicago Tribune reports.
She’s listed it at $2.8 million, far less than the $5.6 million she paid for it back in 2006. Incredibly, Winfrey never actually moved into the home. Perhaps she prefers her houses in California and Hawaii.
The mansion, located on East Lake Shore Drive, has three bedrooms, a solarium, and a two-car garage.
Howard Ronson, a British real estate developer, dreamed of buying up the nine apartments located at 828 Fifth Avenue and recreating the majestic single-family mansion that once stood there.
But Ronson died in 2007 and now his family is giving up on that dream.
