Legendary Cannes Chateau on Market For the First Time in 56 Years – Curbed

Besides movie stars and luxurious hotels, Cannes also has an incredible chateau fresh on the market—and it may be one of the greatest properties ever on offer in the French Riviera. The Chateau de la Croix des Gardes is perhaps most famous for acting as the backdrop of Alfred Hitchcock’s 1955 classic film To Catch a Thief, which stars Cary Grant and Grace Kelly—who would later go on to become Princess of Monaco, the tiny principality about an hour east of Cannes. It’s also said to have been featured in Alain Resnais’ Last Year at Marienbad.

Available for the first time in 56 years, the legendary chateau is listed with Sotheby’s International Realty as “Price Upon Request.” However, the New York Times reports that the property is seeking offers in the 50 to 100 million euro (or $57 to $113 million) range…. (View original article)

Rock Hall of Famer Steve Miller Selling Secluded Mansion on San Juan Islands – Real Estate News and Advice – realtor.com

Mike Coppola/Getty Images

It looks like newly minted Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Steve Miller is attempting to fly like an eagle from his gorgeous spread on Washington’s San Juan Island. He recently listed his northwestern nest for $16,800,000.

That might sound like a princely sum, but Miller isn’t playing the joker. San Juan, the namesake island of the remote archipelago, is a 40-minute seaplane ride from Seattle, which makes it an ideal respite for actors, musicians, p… (View original article)

Sad Bed-Stuy Mansion Can’t Get Anyone to Buy it for $6M | | Observer

When the John C. Kelley mansion, at 247 Hancock Street, was listed in October 2014, the market was surging and it seemed a distinct, if not particularly likely possibility that the Victorian mansion might actually get its asking price of $6 million. Of course, the close-following sale of a townhouse on Gates Avenue for a record-breaking $3 million seemed as much a bad omen as a good one (the market was going up, but…?). But then, a lot of properties were asking more than they should, more … (View original article)

Reopening of Alexandra Palace and park – archive, 20 May 1901 | UK news | The Guardian

On Saturday afternoon London acquired a new “lung” by the reopening of the Alexandra Palace and Park to the public free and for ever. The Palace itself has passed through many vicissitudes, most of them the reverse of prosperous. It was first opened in 1863, being erected mainly with the materials from the international exhibition held in the previous year. Ten years later it was burnt to the ground, and the present structure was erected in its place. Various attempts to run it as a commerci… (View original article)

Quake-damaged Kumamoto Castle to take decades to restore | The Japan Times

KUMAMOTO – Artisans are determined to complete “at any cost” the restoration of Kumamoto Castle, which has been heavily damaged by a series of powerful earthquakes in Kumamoto Prefecture.

Work to repair collapsed stone walls, the tenshukaku (castle keep), and other damaged properties is expected to face difficulties over the initial decade or so of reconstruction. This is especially so because many of the properties are state-designated cultural assets.
