Devon experts are helping one of the region’s oldest estates explore more than 1,000 years of historic records to uncover the secrets of their family’s past.

The Courtenay family at Powderham Castle have been based in Devon for more than 800 years, with records of the name dating back to at least the 9th century.

Their grand estate on the River Exe is a popular tourist destination, and is even hosting this year’s Radio 1 Big Weekend.

Oakham Castle set to reopen with day of Norman celebrations – Rutland and Stamford Mercury

Oakham Castle will get its grand unveiling during a day of Norman celebrations on Bank Holiday Monday following a £2.1m restoration.

The castle is the best preserved Norman Great Hall in England and in keeping with its heritage, there will be a day of Norman celebrations from 11am to 4pm.

Negative gearing changes spark auction rush


A rush of investors keen to secure properties before a possible scrapping of negative gearing rules also helped keep both Melbourne and Sydney’s auction markets hitting clearance rates in the mid 70 per cent range.

Melbourne’s established housing market is showing persistent strengthening pushing the weekend’s auction clearance rates the highest in several weeks as homes sell above reserves.

A five-bedroom home in Melbourne’s eastern suburb of Canterbury sold for $5.11 million or about $310,000 above reserve, making it the most expensive sale on the weekend.
