Andrew Carnegie described the sprawling mansion he had built on East 91st Street as “the most modest, plainest and most roomy home in New York.” The Carnegie Mansion, now home to the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, set off a housing boom in the neighborhood when it was built at the turn of the 20th century, attracting a wave of wealthy residents.
